This page provides a selection of the specimens from the James Catmur Collection that have passed through the Fabre Minerals website and, due to their quality,
rarity, or significance as specimens from interesting locations, have been preserved as reference specimens in #MVM

I’m James and I have been involved in the world of mineral collecting ever since I was a young child, when I used to collect in the mines of northern Derbyshire. Spells of my life living in Mexico, USA, France, Singapore and Spain kept this interest live and also resulted in me learning Spanish and French. As my career continued and I started a family I realized that there was too little time in the day for me to be father to two small children and to keep up with very active mineral collecting (it used to be every weekend). Small children have meant that collecting has come to a bit of a halt, but as they are growing older I am starting to get back out there and start field collecting again. I have always focussed on specimens that are interesting from a crystallographic point of view as I love the shapes and forms of the crystals. I have also focussed on certain regions and types of minerals. I have now decided to focus a bit more, so I am steadily reducing specimens that do not match my new focus. Some of this does makes me very sad as I love the pieces, but I am trying to be tough and keep to my focus. I hope those who now get the chance to see and obtain specimens from my collection will get some idea of what I have tended to collect and will enjoy them as much as I have enjoyed them.

JD90W0: Grouped and isolated crystals with very well defined faces and edges, translucent, very bright, with a very intense and uniform color and implanted on a matrix of Clinochlore. One of the best examples of the 1998 find.

JA46W0: Parallel aggregate of crystals with very well defined faces and edges, some of them doubly terminated and with a neat color zoning, intense bluish green on the terminations and clearer on the dominant faces.

KA96M0: Exceptional specimen for the locality. Very aerial Enargite crystals, with well defined faces and edges showing an excellent luster. Perfect terminal faces, also very bright. On matrix.

JE86W6: Excellent Fluorite for the locality, showing a rare combination of species, with pink rhombohedral crystals of Rhodochrosite and Quartz, both typical of the Sweet Home mine.The crystals of Fluorite, transparent, bright and with a very deep color, show neatly defined faces of the cube and the dodecahedron.

JT94W0: Sharp, individual, rhombohedral crystals of Rhodochrosite. They are translucent, very bright and have a great intensity of color. Furthermore, they are implanted on an aggregate of sharp tetrahedral crystals of Tetrahedrite, an uncommon association. The Rhodochrosite from Sweet Home Mine has become, in just a few years, one of the great classics due to their quality and the permanent closing of the mine.

KX99R4: Group of rhombohedral crystals of Rhodochrosite of considerable size, on matrix with a rich paragenesis: crystals of Quartz, rosettes of yellow Calcite, Tetrahedrite, Chalcopyrite and nice beveled cubic blue crystals of Fluorite.

KH86M8: Parallel growth of tabular crystals from a classic American locality. The crystals, sharp and very well defined, have an excellent luster and a honey color, between orange and yellow.

JR66W3: Thick tabular crystal with simple forms, isolated and practically a floater. It is large, translucent, bright and has a color between yellow and brown depending of the zones. The sample is from a locality that is rarely represented in most of the good mineralogical collections.

KM86M8: From an uncommon American locality. Aggregate of twinned crystals with yellowish and orange reflections, with Chalcopyrite crystals.

Pyromorphite
 

KG68L9: Stunning group of extremely curved clusters of Pyromorphite crystals, that give a globular aspect to the specimen. These very aerial and esthetic globular aggregates are on a Limonite matrix. With an extraordinary color and luster. It has been reported that the globular orange crystals from Bunker Hill are arsenic-rich Pyromorphite specimens, so we analyzed some samples and the results are that they really are pure Pyromorphite, with no arsenic.

JX68W0: A curious crystal of bicolor Fluorite, whose inner part is yellow and its core is blue, with forms of dissolution extraordinarily well marked, really uncommon for the samples from this locality. It is partially coated by an aggregate of very elongated white scalenohedral crystals of Calcite.
The sample is with a label from the Tom Wiesner collection that we'll send to the buyer.

JD66X3: Two doubly terminated crystals that are transparent, extraordinarily bright, and slightly smoky, with inclusions and with curious areas, very limited, of nearly amethyst color. An American classic.

JB14W3: Flattened doubly terminated crystal of Calcite implanted on a polycrystalline growth of small cubic crystals of Fluorite. Transparent, it has pale yellow color.
The sample was previously in the collection of Jan Buma (num. 050115), whose card we’ll send with the Catmur label to the buyer.

KP92L9: Excellent specimen, very representative for the species. This sample shows a very sharp pseudocubic crystal with typical stepped growths. Really good color and brilliance. There is a second crystal on the back side, smaller than the main one, but also with the same high quality.
The specimen is from the James Catmur collection and we’ll send the label with it. This specimen was analyzed many years ago, but we didn’t keep analysis documents, that is why we could confirm the species but we can’t send the analysis to the buyer.
This specimen was photographed for the ‘Sainte-Marie Show 2008’ section of the magazine ‘Minéraux et Fossiles’ and appears on page 22 of number 373, as well as on the Hors-série nº 27 "Minéraux du Cuivre" on page 65.

JF53W0: Octahedral crystal of Fluorite with minor faces of the cube and beveled by the dodecahedron. Translucent, with clear green color, it is implanted on a druse of cubo-octahedral crystals of bright Galena twinned on the Spinel law.

TV96P8: Complex equidimensional crystals, very rich in faces, growing on an early generation of smaller crystals primarily covering a stalactitic growth of a mineral that has disappeared, maybe Limonite?. A very esthetic piece. The sample is from J. Catmur collection and the label indicates that it was acquired in 1994.

JA16X9: Spheroidal Aggregates (well known as “pompons”) of laminar Baryte crystals with a snowy white color and pearly luster. They are on matrix with small but very bright Sphalerite crystals. A French classic.

JV60W0: Aggregate of crystals that combine, in a balanced way, the faces of the dodecahedron and the trapezohedron. They are translucent, very bright, have an orange color and are on matrix, with leafy aggregates of Chlorite.

JD86W3: Parallel growths of cuboctahedral crystals of Galena that are extraordinarily bright, especially bearing in mind that they are from Romania. Some of them show skeletal growths, and with white lenticular crystals of Calcite and small crystals of Siderite and Pyrite.

KF98N0: Thin tabular crystals, very transparent, bright and with yellow color. They have red inclusions of Realgar, more evident on the lower part of the piece.

KX56M2: Very sharp Chalcopyrite crystals with an excellent luster and a well marked twin. On a matrix of thin Quartz crystals which are partially covered by nice Calcite rosettes.

KQ49M0: Group of very sharp octahedral Fluorite crystals, with a very deep color, almost black under the day-light. With Fluorapatite and Bertrandite and on matrix. No finds are recently known from this locality.

JF89X9: Aggregate of very sharp octahedral Fluorite crystals with abundant inclusions. They are on a group of smoky Quartz crystals, with small cubic Pyrite crystals. It is currently very difficult to obtain good samples from this locality.
