The region where the Asturian Fluorites are found is very beautiful, as you can see in this view from Villaviciosa.
Loroñe, a pleasant village next to the Fito hill, which is where the Emilio mine is located.
Views of the village of Berbes, famous across the world for its Fluorites.
A typical 'hórreo' (grain store) in the village of Caravia Alta, which is very close to the Jaimina mine.

Fluorite from the Emilio Mine

The Fluorite from the Emilio Mine is known for its incredible transparency and brilliance. When these two aspects come together with the fact that the majority of specimens are colorless they become almost invisible. So one can see the matrix through the crystals as well as other minerals under them or included in them.
Very few perfect specimens are found, as the type of deposit makes collecting them very hard, so any undamaged ones that do come out are highly sought after by both Spanish and other collectors.

Fluorite with Quartz after Fluorite

Fluorescent light (daylight)

TGG91AQ1: A large Fluorite crystal that was pseudomorphed by Quartz, microcrystalline in a first phase and with small translucent crystals of a later generation. Subsequent recrystallization of the Fluorite has created crystals with balanced cube and tetrahexahedron forms, transparent, with good luster and a uniform light blue color.
We must add that the locality produced only very few specimens, but which were very characteristic with the tetrahexahedron and the transparency and brilliance of the Fluorite crystals.

BERBES AREA

Berbes Fluorite

Fluorite from Berbes, Asturias, Spain, one of the classic fluorite localities in Europe at the moment. Given the poor state of the area, the local collectors, who used to find those amazing pockets of fluorite, are finding fewer and fewer good specimens. These are specimens that come from some careful hunting by the locals.

Berbes Fluorite - Coquera del Liso

In Berbes, Asturies, one of the most famous pockets was the pocket of 'Coquera del Liso' found in March 1993. One huge rock, which weighed more than 50 tons, had fallen from the cliffs. Inside this rock local collectors found great water clear Fluorite crystals with naturally modified corners, frequently associated with Quartz and Baryte. Fabre Minerals bought the whole pocket. These specimens come from this find.

VILLABONA AREA

Moscona Mine

For many years under the general locality 'Villabona' many nice lemon yellow Fluorites have appeared on the market, often associated with saddle Dolomite and often quite large Calcite which has interesting crystal form and is white to yellow in color. Less frequently they were associated with blue, white and once in a while yellow Baryte. Pyrite and Marcasite completed the paragenesis.
As so often happens, production has dropped over the last few years and, while the mine is still active, almost no new material has been found.

La Collada Fluorite - Geoda del Tiro / Geoda Destartalada

In Spain there are two classic localities for quality Fluorite: Berbes and La Collada. At the latter, extraordinary specimens were found when the mine was worked in the 60s and 70s. Their color varied between blue and green, phantoms were frequently present, and the edges of the crystals were often modified. Between 1998 and 1999 with the aid of heavy equipment, they managed to remove the spoil from an area of the La Collada mine and find a number of reasonably sized pockets with good crystals which are violet or deep blue, and often have phantoms. From these finds we were able to present the following specimens.

La Collada old timers

The "Collada" and "Josefa-Veneros" veins at La Collada rate among the greatest in Spanish mineralogy. All Spanish collectors dream of having one of the extraordinary specimens in their collection. The specimens have a wide variation in, normally intense, color, modified edges to the crystals, and really very special forms. Although people recently found material in the same region and it is not that distinct from the classic ones, the old timers still have that special something.

The Fluorite crystals exhibit very marked bevels and with deeper purplish tones, very typical for the historic locality from which this piece comes, the legendary Josefa-Veneros vein.

Specimen size: 20.4 × 14.5 × 6.9 cm = 8.03” × 5.71” × 2.72”

Main crystal size: 1.5 × 1.4 cm = 0.59” × 0.55”

OTHER LOCALITIES

El Papiol Fluorite

Octahedral Fluorite on granite from Berta quarry. This octahedral Fluorite is extremely fluorescent with ultraviolet light. It is considered to be a classic mineral from Spain. Lots of local collectors learnt mineralogy in this small quarry close to Barcelona.

Octahedral Fluorite

NH60Z1: Group of very sharp and translucent octahedral crystals, with a very intense green color, that partially coat a granite matrix. A Spanish classic from a currently closed locality that only sporadically produces samples of this quality. This piece is from an old collection.
Berta Quarry, Can Domènech Hill, Roques Blanques Mountains, Sant Cugat del Vallès-El Papiol, Comarca Vallès Occidental / Baix Llobregat, Barcelona, Catalonia / Catalunya  Spain

Specimen size: 6.2 × 6.1 × 4.3 cm = 2.44” × 2.40” × 1.69”

Main crystal size: 0.7 × 0.7 cm = 0.28” × 0.28”

SV540NBX: Large group of globular aggregates of Fluorite crystals, with the particularity that they are formed by octahedrons if we observe them with a loupe. Apple-green and lustrous, on a porphyritic rock matrix, it comes from a significant discovery made in 2014 very close to the urban center of Barcelona, specifically in the neighboring community of Santa Coloma de Gramenet. This piece, due to its size and color, is among the best of that find.
Can Franquesa, Castellar Hill (Marina Range), Singuerlín, Santa Coloma de Gramenet, Comarca Barcelonès, Barcelona, Catalonia / Catalunya  Spain (2014)

Fluorite with Pyrite inclusions

MG76W4: Group of very sharp cubic crystals with very well defined faces and edges, translucent and yellow with a slightly green color. The sample, with more transparency near the edges than in the central zones, is very representative of this classic Catalan locality.

SV2150MCX: Group of sharp cubic Fluorite crystals, translucent, with good luster and yellow color, with more intense tones towards the interior of the crystals. The specimen shows areas on the edges that are more transparent than the central areas of the faces, and is very representative of this classic Catalan locality.

PV90AI8: Group of very sharp cubes of Fluorite, one of them very large and clearly dominant. They are translucent, bright and have a yellow color with slightly greenish shades. The sample, whose edges are more transparent than the central area, is very representative of this classic Catalan locality and its crystal size is greater than usual.

PTX26AP5: Druse of very sharp Fluorite crystals of good size, between transparent and translucent, soft green in color with yellowish tones and reflections, lustrous, with coatings of small white Calcite crystals. This specimen, of exceptional quality for the locality, also has a curiosity: inclusions of small very intense green 'spots'. It has been said that these spectacular green spots could be due to traces of ions, but in this case color centers seem to be a more consistent explanation, considering the characteristics of the mine.
