On this page we have shown a good representation of the specimens that, because of their quality, rarity or interesting locality, we wish to maintain on our web site as reference specimens although they have been sold.


PANASQUEIRA MINE


 

 

 

There is a great mine that is still active within the Iberian peninsular: the mine of Panasqueira in Portugal. The current low price of Wolfram and the competition from other sources means that commercial operation is tough. But for all this, this classic locality has for over 100 years produced, and keeps on producing, fine specimens. These include exceptional specimens of Apatite-(CaF), Ferberite, Arsenopyrite, Siderite, Quartz and numerous other species such as: Chalcopyrite, Sphalerite, Dolomite, Calcite, Mica, Tourmaline, Fluorite, Topaz and Triplite. It has also produced some very rare minerals including Panasqueiraite and Thadeuite. The great feature of these specimens, apart from their quality, is the fact that they almost always combine quite a few mineral species, so the paragenesis has made this mine famous throughout the world.

I started to visit this locality when I was 14 years old, and I have never stopped visiting it since. So I must have been to visit it well over a 100 times. For many years the sale of mineral specimens from the mine was forbidden, as Wolfram was a strategic mineral. So the moments I passed there acquiring specimens could form the basis of quite an exciting book! Over the years I got to know miners, shift managers, administration staff, engineers and geologists. Some were friendly while others were not, but they were all interested in not only the money they could obtain from 'as pedras' ('the rocks' in Portuguese) but also the beauty of the specimens.

Quite a few years ago, and at the same time as Portugal began to change after its entry into the European Union, things began to become easier. However, unfortunately, obtaining good specimens has one again got more difficult, but this time due to the way the mine is worked and the lower grade seams. All that said, I'm still 'trapped' by the beauty of the minerals and the large number of friends I have developed over all those years.

MG12AM9: Complete tabular floater crystal of Fluorapatite. Translucent, lustrous, light green in color, and with geometric zoning very visible on the prism faces. With coatings of Arsenopyrite and groups of lamellar Muscovite crystals.
We will send the specimen, which comes from the Robert J. Noble collection, in its original Perky box from that collection, which also contains the label, which shows that it was previously in the Bob Sullivan collection.

AH37Y6: Two Fluorapatite crystals with Quartz on Muscovite matrix. The crystals of Fluorapatite, between short prismatic and thick tabular, show a very well-marked geometrical color zoning, deep violet on the central area and clear blue terminations.

AJ27Y6: Aggregate of Fluorapatite crystals on Quartz and with a group of Siderite crystals. The crystals of Fluorapatite, between short prismatic and thick tabular, are very bright and transparent and show a very well-marked geometrical color zoning, blue in the central area and almost colorless on the terminations. The sample has been photographed for a long article in Mineral Up magazine devoted to the mineralogy of Portugal, although we cannot assure that the image will be definitely published.

NG76AL5: A novelty at the Sainte Marie 2020 Virtual show: Group of elongated pale yellow to violet Fluorapatite crystals with zoning that forms white geometric bands in the terminal areas, on a transparent Quartz crystal, with small Chlorite coatings and leafy aggregates of Muscovite . This piece, completely different from those known until now from Panasqueira, comes from a small vug that produced few specimens.

NQ6AL5: A novelty at Sainte Marie 2020 Virtual show: Group of elongated Fluorapatite crystals, some of them doubly terminated, of a color between pale yellow and violet with zoning that forms white geometric bands in the terminal areas, with small leafy aggregates of Muscovite and lamellar Chlorite coatings . The specimen, completely different from those known so far from Panasqueira, comes from a small vug that produced few pieces.

NM40E2: A perfect, floater Fluorapatite, with the base of the crystal healed. It is a nice intense blue-violet color, which is very sought after and difficult to find. On the rear edges of the crystal you can see areas of re-crystallization on which small amounts of Mica, Siderite and Chalcopyrite have formed. A really great specimen.

ND16Z4: Very aerial group of bright tabular crystals with an uncommon very clear cream-pink color, very different than usual for Panasqueira.

NF90AJ5: Group of short prismatic Fluorapatite crystals with good pinacoidal terminations. They are translucent and bright with a violet color and are on a matrix with Muscovite coated by Chlorite. The sample is from a very recent find.

NE50AG4: Very aerial Fluorapatite crystal, very rich in faces, transparent and very bright with very well defined faces and edges and implanted on a group of Ferberite crystals partially coated by Siderite and Muscovite and with Pyrite crystal cubes. Both the color and the crystallographic shape of the Fluorapatite are different than usual for this mine.

CV49AD4: Aggregate of tabular Fluorapatite crystals, one of them clearly dominant, translucent, and very bright with a clear lilac color. The crystals are implanted on a matrix with leafy aggregates of Muscovite crystals.

NA94AC4: Aggregate of Fluorapatite crystals with very well defined faces and edges, translucent, with a uniform color with darker areas on the pinacoid and partially coated by Calcite and small Pyrite crystals. Although it has been recently recovered this sample can be, considering its general aspect, as a “classic”.

TF10Z2: Group of very bright translucent crystals, some of them doubly terminated, with an intense clear blue color. The have the dominant forms of a prism and the pinacoid and less developed but clearly visible pyramidal faces. The aggregate is partially coated by Siderite, Muscovite and small cubic Pyrite crystals. A classic from a private collection and slightly different than more recent samples.

MA87AC9: Very elongated Fluorapatite crystals, some of them doubly terminated. They are translucent, the faces have a fibrous aspect, and they have a very pale yellow color. On a matrix of very sharp Arsenopyrite crystals, with Quartz and spheroidal chlorite growths. The upper levels of Panasqueira are currently offering surprising and pleasant novelties, with samples that are very different from what has been known from this mine.

ET26AD4: Two isolated Fluorapatite crystals with a green color and violet zones. Under the ultra-violet lamp they have two different and very intense fluorescent colors. They are on matrix, with leafy aggregates of Muscovite crystals, Chlorite and small Pyrite crystals. The upper levels of Panasqueira are currently offering surprising novelties, with samples that are different from what is already known.

ND92AC6: Aggregate of tabular, translucent and bright crystals with a very well defined color zoning, pale green on the outer area and darker in their interior. They are with small Quartz crystals. At Panasqueira, this kind of Fluorapatite is well known as “olho de boi” (ox eye) and this sample is of very high quality compared with most of the pieces showing this feature.

AC99Y6: Partially doubly terminated Fluorapatite crystal, very bright and with an intense green color. It is on two polycrystalline growths of Sphalerite, with laminar Siderite crystals, leafy aggregates of Muscovite and small Calcite and Pyrite crystals. The sample has been photographed for a long article in Mineral Up magazine devoted to the mineralogy of Portugal, although we cannot ensure that the image will be definitely published.

NA50AH7: Druse of crystals whose shape varies between tabular and short prismatic, very bright, between transparent and translucent, with very well defined geometric zones and with clear Quartz crystals. Their intense color and the luster of the crystals make the sample just “different”

TP93T3: Group of short crystals of Fluorapatite, one of them clearly dominant, with unusually and extraordinarily bright terminal faces, a clear concentric color zoning and showing Ferberite inclusions. It is on matrix, with Arsenopyrite, Siderite, Ferberite and Schorl-Dravite. A great classic from a classic mine.

AB91Y8: Group of bright and extraordinarily transparent Quartz crystals with Fluorapatite crystals showing a curious double growth, with smooth surfaces on the terminal pinacoid and with fibrous parallel aggregates on the prismatic faces.

TN91AB6: Aggregate of tabular Fluorapatite crystals that are very bright, with a light green color, a very well defined white geometric zone and bordered by lenticular Siderite crystals that completely coat the back of the sample. Partially coated by very sharp Arsenopyrite crystals and small Muscovite aggregates, this sample is a classic that comes with a label of the Richard Shupe collection and an old label (1996) of Fabre Minerals.

NE43E7: Look out for this one: it is marvelous. The prismatic Fluorapatite crystals are large, aerial and have a great color that is somewhere between blue and green. That said please note that, as you can see in the detailed photo, there is a significant contact on one of the upper faces of crystals. This is where there used to be some Siderite (I know this as I removed it). When you display this specimen the contact is not visible, but you see it when you hold it in your hands. So the importance you give to this contact will affect your wish to have this one in your collection. For me, given the beauty and quality, the fact that there is a contact (this is not damage) due to the former Siderite is acceptable, especially given that it is very difficult to find such specimens at a reasonable price.

N13BF2: A real rarity for this mine, as we think that almost no one has ever noted the presence of Tetrahedrite at Panasqueira. The small brilliant crystals are gray-black and are on prismatic Siderite. There is also some green Fluorapatite, which adds to the interest of the specimen. We will give the buyer a copy of the analysis of the Tetrahedrite.

NZ46E6: Very transparent crystals of Quartz. So you can see the well-defined crystals of Arsenopyrite and sprays of Mica inside it. They were trapped in it as the Quartz grew. The Quartz itself is a floater (with a recrystallized base) and has a totally undamaged tip, which is not that common in specimens from Panasqueira given the way they are collected. On the outside there are similar minerals to those inside: Mica and Arsenopyrite.

AM17AC1: Single cubic Fluorite crystal with a considerable size for the locality. It has echeloned growths on the vertices and phantom growths. It is on a Muscovite matrix, with partially doubly terminated Fluorapatite crystals that are pale green in color.
The sample previously was in the well known Fluorite collection of Christian Lucas, whose label we’ll send to the buyer with that of the Martaud collection.

EX99AA2: Fluorite crystals with an octahedral shape, very uncommon at Panasqueira, with rough polycrystalline surfaces cut by the smooth faces of the cube. They have an intense lilac color and are implanted on a matrix of Quartz crystals coated by Muscovite and small Pyrite crystals. Fluorite from Panasqueira, considered rare some time ago, is currently a more common species sometimes as elegant as this one.

NQ60F4: A curious and unusual form. The crystals of Sphalerite have such curved edges and faces that they appear to be almost spherical. The Stannite is a fine coating, which makes the Sphalerite appear satin. At the base there are some prismatic, well-developed crystals of Arsenopyrite that make this one seem aerial and esthetic.

NF11X9: Stannite and Chalcopyrite intergrowths. The Stannite is slightly golden dark gray and the Chalcopyrite shows a brass color. The complexity of these growths, the poor definition of crystalline forms and the fact that Stannite also frequently substitutes for Sphalerite, resulted in Stannite having been almost unnoticed at Panasqueira. Preguiça Mine

Descloizite is a mineral not well known in good quality specimens from the European continent. Even considering that the Preguiça Mine, in Portugal, was known for years for its Descloizite and a wide variety of zinc minerals, the quality of the samples was not especially high because the crystals were too small or not esthetic.
Between 2005 and 2006 groups of collectors from Huelva (Spain) were intensely working that mine and finally found some pockets with specimens of Descloizite of high quality, some of them particularly esthetic (and scarce) stalactitic or columnar and associated with white Calcite.
In our opinion these specimens can be considered as the best Descloizites found in Europe.

Just to be certain, we analyzed them and the analysis proved that they are definitely Descloizite. To be more exact, slightly copper rich Descloizite, but the mineral species is Descloizite. We will send a copy of this analysis to our customers who buy this material.
