JFD13AN5: Smithsonite and Galena after Pyrrhotite and Baryte

Alain Martaud spent quite a long time in La Unión digging for minerals and took advantage of the time to obtain a good number of specimens from the area. All 'special', such as this Smithsonite and Galena pseudomorph that has replaced an older Pyrrhotite crystal, which in addition to being interesting (mineralogically speaking) has the great advantage that it makes the specimen stable, so it will not suffer the alteration that so often happens to pyrrhotites. In addition, a small group of the ubiquitous barytes from that area embellish the specimen.

EX89AA5: Smithsonite on Calcite

Botryoidal Smithsonite growths with a uniform clear green color in vivid contrast with the matrix of white saccharoidal limestone with small Calcite crystals. Like so many specimens in this collection, this one is of great quality for the locality.

JFD160AO8: Smithsonite on Chalcophanite

Both species here were analyzed, and confirmed to be Smithsonite and Chalcophanite. It comes from Francesco Stoppani's extensive collection of European carbonates, and I kept it because I found the association to be interesting as it is not that common in that area.

SV280MXB: Smithsonite with Calcite

Globular aggregates of rhombohedral Smithsonite crystals with very rounded faces and edges, its yellowish green tones displaying a predominance of the latter, with velvety appearance and satiny luster, dotted with small but very sharp scalenohedral crystals of snow-white Calcite, giving a beautiful color contrast to the specimen. Smithsonite had not been reported from this mine before, so this specimen helps to expand its paragenesis.

Botryoidal growths of small, bright, yellowish Smithsonite crystals on matrix with associated small crystals of Cerussite. The specimen is from an old find in Touissit, where Smithsonite is not a very common species, although when it does appear it is usually very bright, as in this case. Small acute rhombohedral crystals of Smithsonite with polycrystalline growths on their faces, a clear green color, with aggregates of yellow Descloizite and on matrix. The morphology of both species proves their true locality which in the autographed label of Folch appears as Tsumeb and not Berg Aukas. This confusion was very common in the past.
