Berbes Fluorite

Fluorite from Berbes, Asturias, Spain, one of the classic fluorite localities in Europe at the moment. Given the poor state of the area, the local collectors, who used to find those amazing pockets of fluorite, are finding fewer and fewer good specimens. These are specimens that come from some careful hunting by the locals.

Cuprite with Quartz
Cuprite with Quartz. Cuprite with Quartz.

TD99P1: The crystals have the very neat forms of the dodecahedron; very unusual, as isolated forms, for Cuprite. They are bright and have reddish reflections, contrasting with the white matrix of Quartz.
The specimen has been reviewed, photographed and published as a new discovery in the magazine ‘Rivista Mineralogica Italiana’ on page 280 in number 2009/4

TV64P1: Excellent sample whose penetrating angles had been molded by the faces of another preexisting mineral, probably Quartz. Those surfaces, then, aren’t real geometrical forms of Bismuth, but the small scales, echeloning and striations coating the surfaces correspond to crystalline growths of the mineral.
This specimen was photographed as a novelty at the 2009 Ste. Marie Show for the ‘Sainte-Marie Show 2009’ section of the magazine ‘Minéraux et Fossiles’ page 22, number 383 and also in the ‘Mineral up’ magazine, on page 29, number 2009/2 and in the Russian magazine ‘Mineral Observer’ on page 60 in the volume 14, number 3.
