Escuela de Minas 2005

(esta página en español)

The Madrid "Escuela de Minas" Show is a small show that is held in a great location. The Escuela de Minas itself is in a historical building with a central patio and columns within it. There is a mineral museum on the first floor that has some great specimens on show, such as the Freieslebenites from Hiendelaencina.
At this show one cannot expect to see many dealers, but those that do attend take the new material they have brought from Tucson. The location is worth seeing and the atmosphere is pleasant and relaxed, especially with the students spending time admiring the great minerals. They sometimes cannot believe that the things that are so hard to study in their text books are so beautiful in nature.

In the upper photo you can see the Escuela de Minas building. It is full of history and the stories of generations of students.
In the lower photo you can see an old fashioned poster for the show and the entrance itself, which, like the rest of the building, is also majestic.

Shots from above of the whole of the show. As you can see it is small but charming. In the lower photo you can see people waiting for the show to open.
One unusual feature of the show is that from 2:30 PM to 5 PM it shuts, which sometimes catches people out and they have to wait patiently until it reopens…

This year there was a promotion for the famous ‘Soplao’ found in La Florida, Cantabria. This marvelous cave has spectacular Aragonite formations, which you will soon be able to visit. At the show they were starting to promote it with leaflets, a book, and a display of photos of this amazing find.
In the lower photo you can see a general view of the display hall: historic on all sides, including the display cases!

Just next to the Escuela de Minas, in the street Ríos Rosas, 23 there is another mineral museum in an unusual building. It is the IGME (Instituto Geológico y Minero de España) with an outstanding atrium whose glass roof allows the sunlight to illuminate the large collection of minerals and fossils that are on display in old cases placed on the various balconies of the beautiful museum.

So this year’s show is over. The flood lit building seems to say a fond farewell, and we like to think that it is looking forward to next year. We will certainly be glad to see it again in 2006, just as will be all the visitors, collectors, and students who really add a great feel to this very special place.
